Travel and tourism is a relatively young industry for China,
but has become one of the most powerful and dynamic sectors
of the Chinese economy in the past few years. The global nature
of the industry itself has had a positive effect on the transition
between the old “planned” economy, to an open market economy.
China has continuously recorded much stronger growth in travel
and tourism than the average Asian or worldwide expenditure.
Outbound departures from China have grown by 15.9% in 2001
and 29% in 2002
China
is the fifth most important travel and tourism market worldwide.With
over 90 million arrivals in 2002 and an estimated 860 million
domestic trips, travel and tourism receipts represent 2.3%
of the total GDP of China. 
Market predicted to grow to 100 million departures in 2020
The registered growth in the outbound
account of China is the most impressive and dynamic one.
Growth of 140% in the period of 1997 – 2001. 12.3 million
departures in 2001 and 16 million in 2002.The outbound expenditure
of China in 2001 was registered at a record breaking 10
billion $US.
